Peace Through Service Day MLK Day: Monday, January 18th, 8am until 2pm
Our first Peace Through Service Day at PS7 (an elementary school in Oak Park) was in January 2009 (photo above taken then.) One House of Peace is committed to continuing to assist the school as they expand their garden for the students. The goal is to teach the children (many of whom have little to no access to fresh vegetables) about where food comes from and how to to grow it.

A note from our School Leader, Todd:
Friends,
Last year PS7 was proud to participate in the presidential inauguration by hosting a volunteer event on Martin Luther King's birthday. The work done on that day prepared for a successful vegetable garden which was planted and maintained by our students and their families. We grew several pounds of tomatoes, corn, pumpkins, zucchini and other vegetables, which the students took home to eat.
This year we plan to expand our garden and grow even more fresh vegetables. You can help us by volunteering at PS7 on Martin Luther King day, January 18th 2010. From 9 a.m. until noon, we will be pulling weeds and raking soil to prepare planting beds. Your help has been essential to the success of our project, and we thank you for all you have done in the past. It's a new year and we look forward to making the garden even more productive. If you have your own tools, including shovels, rakes and gloves please bring them. A rototiller would also be very helpful.

January 18th, you are invited to join One House of Peace as we continue with this garden project. At 8am, we'll gather at One House for sitting meditation. Following the meditation, we'll have a brief discussion in which an Awareness Practice assignment will be given. We will then travel together to the school where we will work (and practice) until noon. All are welcome, though the half-hour orientation to One House (which includes sitting meditation instruction) is a prerequisite. (Next orientation: Thursday, January 14th, at 6:30pm.) Following the morning of work we will gather back at One House for a period of mindful eating (Roberta's delicious vegetarian chili and more!) followed by a group discussion about our experience. (Suggested minimum donation for the morning is $20, which includes lunch.)
E-mail registration@onehouseofpeace.org if you would like to reserve a place in our Peace Through Service Day on Monday, January 18th.
We look forward to practicing with you soon.
In Peace,
Caverly and One House of Peace |
