Winter Good News

Winter 2011
Greetings,
There's so much good news to report regarding our 'Peace in the Schools' program that I truly must practice restraint and save it for another e-mail lest this one become frighteningly epic in length. Thought I'd include a pic from a recent High School Health Fair as a sneak preview, however! More pictures of what we've been up to in the schools can be found here.
One House Bell
On the workshop front, I've never gotten more positive follow-up e-mails as I have post 'Consciously Setting Intention for the New Year,' which was held in three cities this season. Along with that feedback, I've received requests from folks who couldn't attend the workshop, yet would still like to walk through the curriculum. Because I believe in the power of this work, and because the fact that February is quickly approaching won't dilute the power of this work, I've begun offering this workshop in a new format for those who couldn't attend.
'Consciously Setting Intention' consultations -- 4, one hour private sessions dedicated to creating the life you want to create -- have begun. The cost is $250 for the 4 sessions. E-mail
registration@onehouseofpeace.org to sign up. (Conducted in person if in Portland and via Skype or phone for all other locations.)

In December, One House of Peace was invited to talk about 'Consciously Setting Intention,' on the air. Click here to downloadthe radio show interview with 'Real Life with Jennifer Till.'

Words from workshop participants:

"Thank you for offering the workshop, 'Consciously Setting Intention for the New Year.' The tools you shared were very helpful. I have used your awareness practice techniques to successfully find and follow my path. I've been good (mostly) about honoring my intentions and goals. When I do get off-track, I simply use the mechanisms for balancing myself that I learned from you."
~Marianne

"Needless to say over the years I have become a skeptic to
this whole process [of setting intentions] and was on the fence if it was even worth it for 2012. Not able to completely throw in the towel, I attended your workshop and realized I was not taking my intentions to a deeper level. Getting concrete about the next steps I needed to take to reach my intentions was empowering and felt like partnering with the Universe!"

NEXT WORKSHOP IN PORTLAND WITH CAVERLY

Transcending Our Stories,

Embracing a World of Possibility

  • Sunday, February 5, 1pm-3:30pm
  • at Yoga Shala Sliding Scale: $35 - 55
  • What we are unconscious to silently governs us. When caught in our conditioned stories, we are removed from the world of interconnectedness and possibility. Without seeing how these stories have come into being, as well as how they are maintained, we cannot step back from them enough to access what's beyond. In this workshop - through journaling exercises, guided imagery, meditation and group discussion - we will focus on seeing how our stories create the world we live in. You will learn specific tools that liberate you from the apparent 'truth' of these stories and assist in creating the life you want to have. A chant will be offered to open the energetic system to the experience of interconnectedness. Join us as we discover the world of possibility that lies beyond our conditioning.

We are so pleased to be collaborating with Simple Human Studios. For a variety of reasons, it's a perfect fit. Both Simple Human andOne House of Peace have profoundly similar approaches to what we each offer. Each focus on process -- how we do what we do -- and becoming conscious as a way to break habituals pattern of limitation. I highly encourage you to check out Simple Human Studios and am pleased that our weekly sitting group is gathering in such a special, mindfully created space. The meditation group is open to all and meets on Thursday nights at 7:30pm. Our rotation of seasoned practitioners who serve as Guides has expanded and we're gratified that there's been so much support for this evolving group.

Here's what one client of both Simple Human and One House of Peaceis saying about the union:

The creation of a center in which to practice the re-integration of such a fundamental split as that between our bodies and our minds, and to do so skillfully and consciously, is a rare and sacred opportunity; the result of such integrity is potentially endless."

    of One House of Peace

    Sunday, January 15th, 10:00am - 4:00pm
    Sliding Scale Donation Basis: $75 - $125
~ at the Southeast shala ~

Are you hoping to avoid the trap of setting New Year's goals that will end up forgotten by March? Perhaps you've decided to side-step the problem by not setting goals at all? Join us as we reveal how we habitually set goals from a belief that we need to be improved. We don't – if self-improvement as a practice worked, it would have worked by now. Join us as we transcend this assumption and learn to set intention from a place of consciousness, balance, and compassion. In this workshop we will spend time honoring what we've created in the past, letting go and wiping the slate clean. A specific meditation/chant will be offered that balances the energetic system and opens us to a new world full of possibility - a world that is available to you through the practice of consciousness.

This workshop will be open to those new to Awareness Practice and to those more experienced. Come prepared in loose and comfortable clothing for a day of workshop exercises, discussion, journaling, visualizations, and meditation. Bring a journal, something to write with and a bagged lunch. Come prepared to leave with an outlined plan that will assist you in living the life you want to live in 2012.

No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Some months ago, we received an e-mail from someone who had been following the One House of Peace facebook page. He invited Caverly to write an article for his publication 'Lilipoh.' In this season's edition, you will find an essay entitled 'The Joy of Embracing it All.' If you aren't already a subscriber, click here to find the nearest location in your city to purchase a copy. On store shelves until January.

    An Invitation from Caverly:

Since settling in Portland, my greatest passion has been for our 'Peace in the Schools' program. Last week, I had the opportunity to teach in two local high schools, working with students, as well as staff members.
    One House Bell
One House of Peace has been hired through the HealthCorps Program at each school, though their budget is limited. All parties involved are clear that 'this is only the beginning.' I was so inspired by the meetings this month that I set an intention that I recognize is delightfully unreasonable -- to raise the matching funds in order to support the beginning of an on-going curriculum in each of these locations, and then beyond, in the next seven weeks.

Our goal is to raise $2500 by 12/31/11 and $2500 by 1/30/12.
Will you support our vision of creating peace by donating today? 100% of your donation will go to building 'Peace in the Schools' and your gift is 100% tax deductible. You can learn more by reading more below and/or by directly contacting me atcaverly@onehouseofpeace.org.

More About Peace in the Schools:

One House of Peace brings Awareness Practice to all ages. 'Peace in the Schools' serves students by teaching them how to achieve their full potential through this mindful practice. Students learn to pay attention to their experience, while also cultivating understanding and compassion for themselves and others. This Awareness Practice training provides students with the skills to focus better in the classroom, understand how to successfully deal with stress, learn to communicate consciously and cultivate healthy relationships with themselves and others.

Through Awareness Practice exercises, students learn to focus their attention on the present moment, learning how to see what motivates their actions and creating new possibilities, rather than be enslaved by habitual reactions. Students also learn how to be aware of the internal negative dialogue that serves as the foundation to destructive behavior and are given practical methods to transform their internal landscapes. Through these teaching, students are given ways to make different choices - choices that lead to wholesome, healthy, fulfilled lives.

'Peace in the Schools' bases its curriculum on the individual schools it works with. No two programs are exactly alike, just as no two schools are exactly alike. Each program is specifically crafted to meet the needs of the teachers, the staff at large, as well as the students. 'Peace in the Schools' offers seminars and workshops to students within their classroom, as well as separate trainings for staff and teachers.

    Testimonials:

"Last January, Caverly came to Sacramento High School to lead a stress workshop for staff members involved in the Staff Wellness Competition. The hour-long workshop was invaluable for the staff members who struggle with the long workday and high-pressure nature of a teaching position at Sac High.

Caverly centered the workshop on the important quality of presence and mindfully focusing our attention. She led us through techniques for a sitting meditation and led us through a 5-minute practice session. Every staff member walked away with a new, concrete skill they could utilize both at home and throughout the workday.

The staff members had nothing but wonderful things to say about the session: one explained they had never once given themselves those few moments of clarity before and they felt entirely renewed. Another teacher discussed how difficult it was to be present with her students and how this new skill could make her a much better role model and teacher. Yet another staff member articulated a sense of calm that she had never felt before. All walked away with a vibrant and infectious energy.

We were so grateful to have Caverly come to our campus. One teacher invited Caverly back to do a workshop with her students before the CST exams. The resource Peace in Schools is able to provide can truly transform the performance and well-being of staff members and students alike."

    ~Jessica Steele, HealthCorps Coordinator,

    Sacramento Charter High School

"One summer school session I invited, no pleaded with, Caverly to speak to my group of 40 exceptional college Yoga students. They were asking questions about meditation and consciousness that were well beyond me. Since I had attended a meditation retreat with Caverly, I knew she could handle them. The job required the right balance of approachability, down-to-earth reasoning, engaging content, and humor. She surprised me by getting their attention right away with pointed inquiries about thoughts of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll, and they loved her for it and met her head on with questions and a lively discussion. The students thought they were going to have a "nice meditation lady" come and lead them through some exercises, but instead they got Caverly "unleashed," who clearly had come to get some real work done--with intelligence and laughter--in the short time that she had. The opportunity of a captured/captivated audience of young people was not lost on her. Above all, the students learned that meditation is not a passive practice, and that is precisely why it can help their lives. The students responded immediately and were able to sit quietly in meditation for longer, and in more peace, than I had ever seen after she opened this gateway to awareness practice for them."

    Fall Good News

    Fall 2011
Greetings from a sunny Fall day in Portland, Oregon!
(Yes, it really is sunny ... at the moment ... in Portland!)

Much to good news to report in on from One House of Peace. First, many thanks to The Yoga Seed Collective for hosting our last workshop in Sacramento.
    One House Bell
Second, we wanted to express our appreciation to the generous donor who supported One House of Peace in attending this year's NADT (National Association of Drama Therapy) conference in San Francisco earlier this month. It was an inspiring time full of idea sharing and collaboration, particularly in regards to our blossoming Peace in the Schools program. Many of the presenters at the conference are bringing the practice of Mindfulness into the classroom in creative ways. We are pleased to be following suit and have two meetings with various Portland schools scheduled for later this week.

Portland is also soon to be the host of our next workshop: Consciously Setting Intention for the New Year. This workshop will also be offered in Charlottesville, VA, as well as Sacramento, CA. In January, Portland will also be the home for a regular Awareness Practice class and in-person consultations. Details below!

    Freedom through Meditation/Awareness Practice

Caverly will be teaching mediation and offering Awareness Practice through Yoga Shala (SE location). This ongoing class will focus on meditation skills as well as practices that assist in deepening your experience of the chakra system. Specifically, we will learn how to take what we experience 'on the cushion' into our everyday lives. Each class consists of a short period of guided meditation followed by a facilitated group discussion that is interactive and personal, though there is no requirement to speak. Private Consultations with Caverly

Caverly has also been invited to join Yoga Shala's Wellness program. Starting in January, Caverly will be offering private consultations through Yoga Shala for those who would like to bring more consciousness to their lives and deepen their spiritual practice. Caverly believes that "what we are unconscious to, silently governs us." In these sessions, Caverly assists us in seeing ourselves in a broader context in order to understand ourselves more deeply. Through Awareness Practice tools, specific breath and chakra meditations, as well as take home practices, she helps us to find clarity about our individual patterns of suffering, thus leading to the ability to let them go. Sessions are tailored to each student's individual needs and are open to all.

    Words from a Practitioner

I have been practicing with One House of Peace for about a year and a half. I started attending weekly sitting meditation classes in which we learned chants and practiced silent sitting while focusing on our breath, followed by a discussion about whatever topics people brought up. I was amazed at Caverly's insights and charismatic manner. I had wanted to try meditation for the physical benefits-lower blood pressure, etc. I had no idea it would change my life spiritually, emotionally and intellectually. I had no idea there was so much going on in my mind about which I was unaware.

After a couple of months, I began going to individual consultations with Caverly. These consultations are incredibly valuable. Caverly has led me to discover parts of myself I never knew existed, and has helped me to see a world of new possibilities for me. Through Caverly, I am learning how to focus my awareness, and begin to analyze what is going on inside of me. I have learned a lot about how my mind works-what my karmic wiring is. Together, we look at assumptions and projections I make. I have learned that we cause our own suffering and, with practice, we can lead ourselves to our own freedom. I have been able to let go of some of the burdens I have been carrying for years. I am developing more compassion for myself and all life. Caverly's wisdom has given me a new perspective on life! In our consults we discuss whatever is on my mind and, through dialogue, chants, and guided visual imagery, Caverly gives me tools to work with it. Caverly's nonjudgmental manner allows me to open myself up without any fear. I always leave the consult with new insight about myself, and specific guidelines for practice until the next session.

Caverly has led me, and continues to lead me, to question many of the assumptions I make about who I am, what I should be doing in my life. Thanks to her, a year and a half ago I began an exciting new journey that I hope to continue for the rest of my life.
